Hanging & care

The gallery rule for height, the right fixing for the weight, and how to keep the painting happy for a lifetime.

Hanging height

eye line145–152 cm · 57–60 incentre of the painting, not the hooksofa / console15–25 cm above furniture

The centre of the painting at 145–152 cm from the floor, whatever its size – the gallery standard. Over a sofa or console, leave 15–25 cm above the furniture.

Fixings by weight

  • Under 5 kg – a hardened picture hook.
  • 5–15 kg – a screw and wall plug, or into a stud.
  • Over 15 kg – two fixings, or a French cleat.

Care

Light
Display away from direct sunlight and strong artificial UV. Indirect daylight or gallery-style LED lighting is ideal.
Environment
Keep in a stable environment – away from radiators, fireplaces, and rooms with high humidity or temperature swings.
Cleaning
Dust gently with a soft, dry, lint-free brush. Never water, sprays or household cleaners. For anything more, consult a conservator.
Handling
Hold the painting by the stretcher edges only. Avoid touching the painted surface.
